The 40 Jersey City residents who died in the Sept. 11 terror attacks were remembered this morning.
Barbara Smith, of Jersey City, sits in the crowd to remember her best friend, Barbara Etzold, who worked in the North Tower.
"Reading the names aloud is the way to keep their memory alive and it really is the most important thing and I come here every year," said Smith. "The crowd trends to get a little smaller so it's really nice that you folks are here."
Jersey City was one of the many cities in New Jersey that sent first responders to help.
A memorial now stands at the site of a triage center where emergency responders provided aid and assistance to those who crossed the Hudson River that day.
City officials, public safety officials, community members, friends and family honored the Jersey City residents who died in the terrorist attacks. The names are forever etched on the memorial to make sure they are never forgotten.
"The freedoms we have here are very fragile and every year the crowd gets a little smaller at this 9/11 memorial," said Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop. "So we try to amplify to let people know what happened and remember and think about it because it was a day very much like today."
