Jersey City PD, Amazon work together to catch package thieves
The Jersey City Police Department is teaming up with Amazon to stop porch pirates in the act.
Chief Michael Kelly says as the holiday season approaches, package thefts are bound to increase.
The Hudson County police department is using technology to help catch criminals in the act.
The online retailer gave detectives packages with GPS trackers inside. They then drop the deliveries in neighborhoods with high rates of thefts and if a package is stolen, an alarm will sound in the west precinct.
Police say they may get two arrests if the burglar goes somewhere to sell the stolen gift.
The packages are being left at volunteers' homes.
The police department is also using doorbell and surveillance cameras to capture the thieves.
