Jersey City, Newark rank lowest for depression and suicide rates in new national report
New Jersey posted some of the strongest mental‑health statistics in the country in a new national report tied to the International Day of Happiness on March 20.
WalletHub analyzed more than 180 large U.S. cities using 29 indicators related to happiness, including depression rates, income‑growth rates and average leisure time.
Jersey City was found to have the lowest depression rate in the nation. The report says it is 2.6 times lower than in Huntington, West Virginia, which had the highest rate.
Newark ranked lowest nationwide for suicides per 100,000 residents. That rate is 6.9 times lower than in Casper, Wyoming, the city with the highest number.
None of the New Jersey cities ranked among the top 20 happiest overall, with the top three happiest cities in the U.S. being Fremont, California; Bismarck, North Dakota; and Scottsdale, Arizona.
