Federal budget cuts are coming and they are expected to hit New Jersey hard.
Newark Mayor Cory Booker and Jersey City Mayor Jeremiah Healy say they are facing a 24 percent cut in their public housing budgets, which are already pretty tight. Both cities have faced cuts in previous years, but the mayors say the cuts have never been this large.
Newark Housing Authority, the largest in the state, will only receive $38 million from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, down from an expected $50 million. Jersey City Housing Authority, the second largest in the state, will receive a little more than $11 million instead of the normal $15 million. Booker and Healy hope that with a new Congress and Senate, they will be able to get the funding back for their cities. Meanwhile, the mayors say two New Jersey senators are working on the problem.
