The mayor of Jersey City had his day in court Monday in a disorderly conduct case.
Mayor Jeremiah Healy is accused of disorderly conduct, obstructing justice and resisting arrest after an encounter with police. The incident occurred a little over a year ago outside Barry?s Tavern in Bradley Beach.
Healy?s lawyer said the mayor tried to break up an argument between a couple outside the bar. The couple supported that story on the stand Monday. However, the two arresting officers painted a different picture in court.
Both officers describe Healy as drunk and disorderly during the incident. When Healy was told he would be arrested, Patrolman William Major claims Healy tried to throw his weight around as the Jersey City mayor.
Healy?s attorney said the police officers roughed him up during the encounter.
The judge denied a motion to find Healy not guilty of the charges against him. The trial is scheduled to resume Friday. If convicted, Healy could serve a few months behind bars and pay a fine of up to $2,500.
