A memorial service was held Friday to honor a Jersey City police officer gunned down eight years ago.
Law enforcement officers from all across Hudson County spent the day remembering Officer Marc DiNardo, who was killed during a shootout with suspects in 2009. Four other officers were shot during that incident.
Officer DiNardo’s family members spoke during the memorial service.
“It’s amazing, eight years later, to see how many people care about Marc, that they come out here to honor him,” says DiNardo’s widow Mary DiNardo.
Also in attendance was the man who received the officer’s heart in an organ transplant.
“I was near death and I was in the ICU for over 80 days,” says Don Zolkiwsky. “During that time there wasn’t enough hearts to go around. I was very lucky.”
About 150 to 200 officers and members of the public turned out for the service.
