(08/29/06) NEWARK ? A new law is now in effect that will prevent New Jersey residents from trying to turn trash into cash at tax time.
Under the new law, the IRS will decide what type of donated goods can be written off as a tax deduction. Supporters say this will prevent write-offs for completely unusable items donated to charity. Representatives of the Goodwill in Newark say they see people drop off bad items, such as smelly clothes, on a daily basis. Although they appreciate people trying to help, they say some of the items just end up going in the dumpster.
Goodwill officials aren?t sure what type of impact the new law will have. However, they hope it encourages people to chip in and help out.
