Internet service at Rutgers University has mostly stabilized after a cyberattack left much of the campus without Internet for several hours.

On the university's website, the school says the network "remains under observation and monitoring, but some services may still experience intermittent degradation throughout the evening."

University officials say the attack began at around 10 a.m. Monday and lasted until mid-afternoon. The denial-of-service, or DDoS attack, overwhelmed the network's bandwidth, making it nearly impossible for students to access the system. No data was compromised, according to university officials.

This is at least the fifth attack on Rutgers University's network in the last year. Similar attacks in May and August made the network inaccessible.

After the August attack, the university hired three cybersecurity firms to help protect its computer networks. At the time, school officials said the firms would be tasked with testing the university's network for vulnerabilities and other work that officials said they could not discuss for security reasons.

Several students who spoke to News 12 New Jersey expressed their frustration with the outage, since many of their assignments must be completed online. Many also say they were told this year's increase in tuition would go toward better cybersecurity.
