(04/10/06) KEYPORT ? Keyport Mayor John Merla won?t let his indictment on federal corruption charges prevent him from seeking re-election.
Merla wants his name on the ballot for the November election, which will take place just weeks after his federal trial. Merla was indicted on eight counts of corruption in 2005. Despite the accusations of bribery and extortion, Merla refused to step down from office.
Some residents believe Merla has every right to run again because he?s innocent until proven guilty. However, others think his ethics and policies are bad for their city. The mayor plans to focus on issues like redevelopment, rebuilding the waterfront, expanding senior services and recreation for children during his campaign.
