Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials released hundreds of migrants from ICE detention centers Thursday.
The migrants will be placed in shelters. About 600 people were released from custody Thursday. Another 500 were released Christmas Day.
ICE officials say that they release about 2,000 migrants a week.
El Paso shelter directors say that they usually communicate with ICE beforehand so that arrangements can be made.
The migrants usually stay in El Paso for about two days before leaving for their next destination.
