There are no longer any Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainees being held at the Essex County Correctional Facility.
Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo made the announcement on Tuesday.
ICE removed their inmates per the facility's request.
“We have had a very professional working relationship with ICE during the last 13 years. We have always maintained that this was in the best interest of the detainees to remain close to their family, friends, attorneys and community organizations helping them in a facility that was safe and secure. Our ECCF fulfilled this responsibility very well and we thank ICE for their partnership,” DiVincenzo said in a statement.
Essex County is now housing Union County inmates as part of a shared-services agreement to address financial challenges.
