An Elizabeth man accused of fatally stabbing his fiancée just a few hours after getting engaged last month told authorities as much in the 911 call shared with News 12 New Jersey on Friday.
Jose Melo, 52, can be heard telling the emergency dispatcher, “I think I killed my girl,” and that they “got into an argument” and he stabbed her.
Police identified the victim as 31-year-old Naket Trinidad Maldonado.
The call came in just after 9 a.m. on Dec. 30, less than 24 hours after Melo proposed to Trinidad.
According to an affidavit, police say they found Trinidad lying at the entrance of the third-floor bathroom. They also found a large knife with suspected blood on a nearby couch.
Trinidad was stabbed repeatedly in the chest and abdomen, according to the affidavit.
The documents state that Melo’s parents also live at the address on Florida Street. They said he used his mother’s phone to call 911.
Melo’s parents allege Trinidad and their son went to a club the night before and returned in the early morning. The affidavit mentions that Melo appeared to be under the influence during the incident.
Melo is charged with first-degree murder and two weapon charges.
Melo has a prior criminal history. He is on the New Jersey State Police Sex Offender Internet Registry for a 2010 conviction. His file reads that he threatened a woman with a box cutter and sexually assaulted her in Union County.
Friends of Trinidad have maintained a memorial outside the Florida Street residence. She was a mother of two. The affidavit mentions that a 3-year-old child was present on the night of the stabbing.
