An audit of the Union City School District shows some controversial spending of the district's nearly $150 million budget.

According to a report by the state Department of Education, cell phone spending for bus drivers cost the district $13,000 per month. The audit also shows drivers were paid six hours of overtime a month simply for charging the phones.

State lawmakers are livid over the spending.

"If they don't answer because their phone is dead ? they should be fired," says Assemblywoman Marcia Karrow (R-District 23).

State Education Commissioner Lucille Davy says the spending being examined was from more than two years ago. She insists the district has improved its spending.

Union City's superintendent, Stanley Sanger, says some of the expenditures are being exaggerated. According to Sanger, the cell phone expenses included the cost of new handsets and GPS service. Sanger also blames the overtime pay on the previous administration.

Other spending under the microscope includes the purchase of a $1,700 flat screen television for the district's human resources director.
