The town of Irvington may lose future state funding for not completing work they were given nearly half a million dollars to do more than six years ago.
Irvington received the money to begin the cleanup of abandoned properties that still has not been done. The Department of Environmental Protection is considering dropping the town from its Brownfield program. According to DEP officials, the town cannot show where the money went.
Sources say the situation may have led to a policy change within the department as well. According to the agency, all funds will be given out one phase at a time when the work is finished instead of giving grant money all at once.
Agency officials publicly insist the new policy is not a result of the Irvington case, but should prevent it from happening again the future.
