Hundreds gathered in Jersey City Monday to protest the police custody death of Minnesota resident George Floyd.
Monday’s demonstration started and ended at Berry Lane Park with the group walking to the south precinct of the Jersey City Police Department.
News 12 New Jersey is told that Jersey City Police Director James Shea worked with the protest’s organizer, Nevin Perkins, to develop a safe way to hold the rally. Police helped to clear the streets to ensure that everyone was able to protest peacefully and safely.
The protesters denounced police brutality and what they say is systematic racism in police departments around the United States.
Some of the demonstrators said that the protests must remain peaceful so that the message will not be lost.
Many protests around the country have devolved into violence, with looting and vandalism occurring in many American cities.
