Several Hoboken police officers are being hailed as heroes after they rescued a woman who was in the Hudson River.
“I’m proud of their heroism, proud of their teamwork,” says Hoboken Police Chief Ken Ferrante.
The incident happened around 4 p.m. Monday. Rookie officer Tyler Soto was flagged down by some kids who told him that there was a woman in the river. She was just off the rocks, under the walkway at Sixth Street.
Soto, who has only been on the force for a year, called for backup and then jumped the fence toward the river.
Officer Libon Schelmety was next on the scene and grabbed a water bag and rope to tie around Soto who went in for the victim.
“I took about one step in, which was deeper than I thought, maybe up to my waistline,” says Officer Soto. “From there I was able to reach out. The tide was pushing her towards the shoreline.”
But by then the woman had lost consciousness. Police say that at least five more officers were on the scene and helped get the woman off the rocks and onto a flat surface. EMTs were able to resuscitate her and get her to the hospital.
The 34-year-old woman was reported missing from her home in Parsippany around 1 a.m. Tuesday, after she had already been taken to the hospital.
She was reunited with her family and is expected to be OK. Her name was not released by police.
