After two decades in business, a Hudson County antiques store is set to close its doors and disappoint many loyal customers.
Erie Street Antiques, which is actually on Washington Street in Hoboken, announced that it is liquidating and closing down. The owners of the shop say the faltering economy, combined with high rent prices and a changing - and dwindling - clientele are the main factors in their decision.
According to residents, Washington Street in Hoboken has changed shape over the last few years. What used to be a center of shopping, they say, has now morphed into a strip that primarily showcases restaurants and bars. John Mulholland, of Hoboken, says tough times cause shoppers to choose malls and discount stores over local shops.
The manager of Erie Street Antiques says the store will stay open until the current inventory of merchandise is sold, which could take more than a month.
