Authorities are searching for the person who struck and killed a 21-year-old Ramsey man in Hoboken over the weekend.
Zachary Simmons was struck early Saturday while crossing the street at Willow Avenue and Sixth Street in Hoboken. Authorities say the sport utility vehicle that struck him fled the scene.
Simmons was slammed into a parked car and did not survive his injuries.
Police describe the vehicle as a large SUV, either a Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Tahoe or a GMC Yukon. Surveillance video taken from Hoboken Discount Liquors shows the SUV fleeing the area after the crash. The driver appears to fail to stop at several stop signs. A license plate cannot be made out in the video.
Witnesses tell police that the license plate may have been from New York.
Simmons was the cousin of Ben Simmons, who was picked first by the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA draft. Less than 48 hours before his death, Zachary Simmons attended the draft in Brooklyn to celebrate with his cousin.
Ben Simmons posted a photo Saturday night on Twitter showing him standing with his cousin. The caption read: "#ripZacharySimmons."
Anyone who may recognize the SUV or has any information about the hit-and-run is asked to call Hoboken police at 201-420-2100.
