The heat has caused Interstate 287 south to buckle in Riverdale and Montville after bridge joints expanded.
This morning, the right lane of Interstate 287 south, just south of Route 23 in Riverdale is closed, but the left and center lanes remain open for the morning commute.
Meanwhile, the left and center lanes of Interstate 287 south in Montville are closed but the right lane and shoulder are open. Drivers are allowed to use the shoulder as a travel lane.
The New Jersey Department of Transportation says crews worked overnight to repair the damaged roadway joints and are expected to complete work later this morning to reopen all lanes.
"The metal roadway joints expanded in the extreme heat, pushing against the concrete causing it to break apart. Crews replaced the rebar and are repaving the damaged section of the roadway," DOT says.
