Hauppauge woman indicted in connection to hit-and-run that seriously injured 2 boys

It was an emotional day in court, as the alleged hit-and-run driver accused of running down a 9-year-old was indicted.
Symone Houston says her family's lives changed in the blink of an eye this past summer when her 9-year-old son Troy Russell was one of the victims in a hit-and-run.
Authorities now say the driver was Shannon Palmer, 31, of Hauppauge. She was charged with leaving the scene of an accident with serious physical injury.
Because of new COVID-19 restrictions, the media, relatives and friends were not allowed inside of the courtroom as Palmer was indicted by a grand jury.
"My son became a victim when Shannon Palmer left him on the side of the road with no regards for his life," says Houston.
According to police, Palmer struck Russell and 12-year-old Toriano Jamison on the evening of Aug. 3 when they were riding their bikes with another boy on Express Drive north in Ronkonkoma.
According to the indictment, Palmer said to police the following day, "How are the kids? The two kids I hit. I hit three kids. I didn't even know what road I was on when I hit something."
Houston says this has been a very long road to recovery for her son since that day. She says he just got home from the hospital late last week after having a total of 10 surgeries.
Meanwhile, Palmer's attorney says the legal process has to unfold.
"The assumption is that's my client. I don't know that yet. I wasn't there," says Chris Brocato. " We all weren't there. And you know what, she wasn't there either. We've got to go through this process. We can't go through this lynch mob-style."
Brocato says it's unclear whether his client made the statements to police. Palmer is due back in court Jan. 19.
