Hackensack officials are looking to attract more residents and businesses to the city.
Construction has been ongoing in Hackensack for the past two years in the downtown area to accommodate potential growth. State Street was recently changed to make way for two-way traffic and the same will soon be done to Main Street.
Officials say that they are hoping to bring in more businesses. New, luxury apartment buildings are also being constructed in the city.
"It's overwhelming…but I think it's very good for the town,” says Constance Bovino, with the Hackensack Condo & Co-op Advisory Board.
There's also major renovations for existing properties. Kushner Companies closed on the two buildings that make up Prospect Place last week. The complex has had to deal with a crumbling parking structure twice.
"Luckily nobody got hurt when it went down,” says Murray Runin, who is also on the Hackensack Condo & Co-op Advisory Board.
Kushner Companies says that they will be redoing all of the units, as well as the lobbies. There will also be a new business center and lounge.
"Little by little it's building up and it should help all the other buildings that are around at the same time,” Runin says.
“It shows you [what] a city can do,” Bovino says. “If there’s a will, there’s a way.”
Hackensack officials are also pushing to allow more liquor permits for the city, as a way to attract more bars and restaurants.
