The names of the manufacturers of guns used in crimes will now be added to a public database about gun violence statistics.
Gov. Phil Murphy spoke in Jersey City Tuesday to share how New Jersey is expanding its efforts to inform the public about gun violence.
Murphy signed an executive order last year calling for the release of information related to the guns used in crimes. The information is released monthly and is broken down by city and county, the type and caliber of gun and the source of the guns. The names of the gun-makers will now be on these lists as well.
“Every county, literally every county is impacted by gun violence…These reports…are showing us all, for the first time, where the guns committed in crimes are coming from,” Murphy said. “We must also wake up the manufacturers. Surely it won’t be good publicity for them to know that they make the guns popularly trafficked by criminals.”
The governor said that his hope is to inspire manufacturers to make reforms so that their weapons won’t be used in crimes.
