? A South Carolina boy?s visit with relatives in Newark turned tragic Friday when he was crushed between an elevator and a shaft wall.
Kadir Grissom-Baxter, 7, was only nine days into his summer stay with his grandmother. Relatives say Kadir?s fascination with the elevator may have led to his death. An uncle says the boy wasn?t used to elevators and, although he was warned, they say Kadir panicked when the elevator started to move and he tried to get out. Authorities say that?s when he was crushed between the elevator and the shaft wall. The elevator is now shut down as a precaution. The family says it is typically out of order a few times a year, but authorities have deemed the incident an accident.
The boy?s grandmother says she is distraught over his death and upset that it happened while he was in her care. The boy?s parents are planning funeral arrangements. There?s no word on whether the service will be held in South Carolina or New Jersey.
