A federal grand jury indicted the man prosecutors claim is the Mad Hatter bank robber Wednesday.
James Madison, of Maplewood, was arrested Sunday after he allegedly robbed a bank in Union. After his arrest, the FBI announced they believed Madison is also the man behind a series of at least 17 other robberies throughout the Garden State. In those robberies, the suspect was dubbed the ?Mad Hatter? because he wore a different hat each time.
Madison?s church pastor, Ronald Christian, met with him Wednesday in jail. ?He [Madison] says it is not he who has committed all these robberies,? Christian said. ?He has only been charged with one. He is really looking to be vindicated in this whole situation.?
Christian said he has a hard time believing a member of his congregation at Christian Love Baptist Church could be involved in the bank robberies.
So far, Madison has only been charged with the robbery that occurred Sunday in Union. Prosecutors are still working to link him to the other 17 robberies.
