A state grand jury had voted not to file any criminal charges against a Paterson police detective for a deadly 2022 shooting.
That shooting happened during a police encounter in October 2022 in the city.
In a report from the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General, 33-year-old Florida resident Hui Zhang was running from police officers after he crashed his car into three other vehicles.
Detective Victor Lora chased Zhang as he tried to bring into other cars, and even attempted to pull a driver out of a vehicle.
Lora reported that he saw a gun and ordered Zhang to drop the weapon. Multiple witnesses stated that Zhang refused and pointed the gun at Lora, who then shot and killed him.
Officials later determined Zhang’s weapon was fake.
