Gov. Phil Murphy says he will sign a bill this week making a woman’s right to choose to have an abortion the law in New Jersey.
The bill passed both the state Senate and Assembly on Monday.
Hundreds of “right to life” protesters gathered outside the State House ahead of the vote to show their opposition to the bill.
But the governor says the law is necessary in case the United States Supreme Court strikes down the Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion. A woman's right to choose was already a law in the state due to state Supreme Court decisions.
The Freedom of Reproductive Choice Act is a narrower version of the Reproductive Freedom Act that progressives tried and failed to get through the Legislature.
