State officials say that the number of fatalities caused by vehicle crashes – including pedestrian deaths – was one of the highest on record in New Jersey last year. There were 691 deaths in 2024, according to New Jersey State Police.

Gov. Phil Murphy signed a traffic study measure into law on Monday called “Target Zero.” The governor says it is a comprehensive effort to save lives.

Elizabeth fireman Steve Dunn promotes roadway safety on his Instagram page, "The Biking Fireman." He says he fully supports this effort.

“There aren't really accidents. There are predictable crashes and predictable locations, and we have the tools to control the dangerous conditions that are in our environment so when people make mistakes on our roads, it doesn't have to be fatal,” Dunn says.

Dunn says Hoboken is a microcosm of what New Jersey needs to become, since it's a densely populated town but hasn't had a traffic fatality in about seven years.
