Governor Jon Corzine (D-NJ) convened a town hall-style meeting Tuesday after the scandal plagued University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) laid off 120 workers. The sudden layoffs come in the wake of charges that the university improperly used funding and engaged in nepotism. Corzine planned to shuttle between the school?s three campuses to address workers? concerns and the continuing ethics investigation. The governor told university employees that he is committed to the success of UMDNJ. He discussed the possibility of merging the school with Rutgers University to save the state money and jobs. Up to $243 million of misused UMDNJ funds are the subject of an intense probe that has already uncovered years of fraudulent billing by the university.Over the next few months, Corzine said he expects to have an answer on the possibility of a merger.
