Gov. Christie lent his signature to a hard-won higher education restructuring bill today.
The governor signed the bill today on Rutgers University's New Brunswick campus.
Christie also had stops in Newark and Camden. Together, these are the cities affected most by the new measure.
The bill gives Rutgers University a medical school and grants research status to Rowan University.
The legislation also paves the way for shifting UMDNJ to Rutgers and Rowan.
The bill links Rowan and Rutgers-Camden for joint science projects, but does not merge the two schools.
Christie promoted the proposed changes for months before the Democrat-led Legislature agreed to them.
