An animal shelter in Manahawkin has a problem that many other shelters wish they had -- it has no dogs and only three cats left for adoption.
The Southern Ocean County Animal Facility posted on Facebook that it was completely sold out of dogs that were ready for adoption and only had a handful of cats left.
“You are looking at a phenomenon that we love,” says Mary Alano, assistant manager of Southern Ocean County Animal Facility. “We have no dogs available for adoption at this time because they've all been adopted.”
The shelter says that in just the last few weeks more than 80 pets were given forever homes between the two Ocean County-run shelters in Manahawkin and in Jackson Township.

“It's a great feeling,” says Jackie Strawder, assistant manager. “It definitely is [great] to see the hard work of the staff, all of our volunteers come to fruition.”
Once a dog enters the animal facility, it takes about seven to 10 days for the staff to get it ready for adoption. The next dog ready to go is named Odin. He'll be ready for adoption next Monday.
“The generosity of all the people that live in Ocean County and all the Ocean County visitors they just really opened their hearts and homes to all the animals this time,” says Mary Alano, assistant manager.
Between the two facilities in 2019, the staff says more than 1,200 dogs and cats found new homes -- one of the busiest years they can ever remember.
