Americans looking to get a jump on their New Year’s resolutions to stay fit were able to participate in the annual “First Day Hike” event.
State parks across the United States held the family-friendly event on Jan. 1 encouraging people to go out and enjoy the great outdoors.
The Twin Lights State Park in Highlands put a different spin on the event but also allowing people to hike up the winding staircases of the Twin Lights lighthouses.
“It has one of the most magnificent views on the eastern seaboard and it’s a free museum, like all national parks,” says Twin Lights Historical Society trustee Mark Stewart. “We encourage people to come all year long.”
About 55,000 people participated in “First Day Hike” programs in 2018. They hiked over 133,000 miles, according to organizers.
