A gas leak at the intersection of Morris and Summit avenues led to the evacuation of about 20 homes in Summit Thursday morning, fire officials said.
PSE&G crews were working to repair the leak, which also caused a two-hour delayed opening at Lawton Johnson Middle School.
The number of evacuated homes dropped to about 12 by late morning, according to Summit fire officials.
A resident says he was notified about the leak around 4 a.m. “By like 5:30 a.m. or 6 a.m., they were digging holes in the road to release the pressure. They had to come in the house; they had these little gas meters to check the levels,” said Jeff Massey, of Summit.
News 12’s Tony Caputo reports that the additive used to detect natural gas was occasionally noticeable but not persistent.
Road closures remain in effect, and fire officials hope residents can return home today.
The cause of the leak is still under investigation.
