The death of a Warren Hills Regional High School football player has left many people in the community in mourning.
The star quarterback's death has left many friends wanting to make sure his memory lives on.
Evan Murray, 17, suffered an injury on the field during Friday's game and died several hours later. According to the medical examiner, Murray died from internal bleeding caused by a laceration on his spleen. Now, several friends and teammates have started a fundraising effort, which has far exceeded their expectations.
Ethan Wimmer and Kaden Piccione, friends of Murray's, started selling T-shirts with Murray's jersey number and the team's motto. They initially planned to sell them to students at Warren Hills High in an effort to raise money for Murray's family. However, hundreds of orders started coming in.
"We found out kids from California, New Hampshire, our rivals at Voorhees, Hackettstown; they all want them," says Piccione.
In order to keep up with demand, they started a GoFundMe page for more donations. The donation page and the T-shirt sales have raised more than $60,000.
Murray's friends say although his death was tragic, it has brought the community closer together.
"People that I wasn't comfortable talking with three days ago, they're my friends now. Everybody's friends. It's amazing to see everyone come together," says Wimmer.
All the money that has been raised will benefit scholarship funds in Murray's name.
