Freeport school holds Juneteenth celebration to teach students meaning of holiday

A Long Island school held Juneteenth celebrations ahead of this Sunday to ensure students understand the meaning behind it.
The Atkinson Intermediate School in Freeport celebrated the holiday through percussion, ensemble and dance performance. There was also a poetic skit and a song from the chorus.
Students ended up finding out what Juneteenth really means.
Nasri Munfakh, a fifth grader and member of the Kindness Club, gave a speech about the day.
"Think about what a tree is, a tree is tall, proud, upstanding and helpful to people," Munfakh said. "So, if we're mroe like tree, it makes the world a better place. It doesn't matter if it's one by one or 1,000 by 1,000."
Dr. Kishore Kuncham, superintendent of the Freeport Union Free School District, says that she is very proud of the students and "extremely touching" that the district is being "change makers."
