Colts Neck elementary school won’t be renamed for President Trump
A Colts Neck elementary school won’t be renamed after President Donald Trump after a few weeks of debate in the community.
School Board President Angelique Volpe made the announcement at Wednesday night’s board meeting.
“I want to make it clear, very clear, the board will not be moving forward on the proposed name change of Conover Road Primary School,” Volpe said.
Board member Robert Scales raised the idea during the March 4 meeting.
The district has two similarly named schools: Conover Road Elementary School, which serves grades three through five, and Conover Road Primary School, which serves students from pre-K through second grade.
Scales said during that meeting that the president “contributed a great deal of time to this great town of Colts Neck.”
The proposal drew mixed reactions from the community and was even mentioned on Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update.
But despite the reaction, Volpe made it clear that the district never had any safety concerns.
“Our district never received any type of threat regarding the proposal. There has not been anything brought to my attention, to the police department in town,” she said.
Volpe also acknowledged Scales at the meeting and told him that the idea was a nice sentiment.
“I’m sorry this got blown out of proportion,” she said.
A majority of Colts Neck voters voted for Trump in the 2024 presidential election.
