New Jersey has three horse racing venues, two have done very well since adding sports betting, and now there’s talk that Freehold Raceway will soon be adding the revenue stream as well.
When sports betting was legalized in New Jersey back in 2018, Monmouth Park and the Meadowlands opened up for sports betting almost immediately, and have certainly profited since.
But apparently there’s movement in Freehold to change that.
“I like the environment at Monmouth, so it depends on how they establish it,” says Bonnie Wright, of Jackson. “At the bar, they have everything going on there. It’s more of a social environment, but certainly if Freehold makes it work out that way, I would go there.”
Officials have received approval from city council to offer sports betting at the track. Owners of the racetrack will need to request a sports betting license from the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement.
There are plans to do some renovations within the existing structure.
No specific date has been set for an opening or if any specific company will be tied to Freehold Raceway.
Since launching the William Hill sportsbook at Monmouth Park and the FanDuel Sportsbook at the Meadowlands, the tracks have brought in a combined $250 million in sports gambling revenue.
