A Franklin Township detective died Thursday from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
William Furmick, 62, had been a 33-year veteran of the force as a crime scene and forensics detective. Police are still investigating, but the gunshot appears to have been self-inflicted.
The shooting occurred around 3 p.m., and the fatal shots are believed to have been fired from Furmick's service weapon. Fellow officers say they heard one gunshot, ran to Furmick's office and found the detective on the floor. He was then rushed to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.
According to police, Furmick had been having a normal day prior to the incident. Shortly before the shooting, he had dropped off evidence at the state police crime lab.
Furmick was a father of three who was credited with dedicating his life and career to his police work.
