Legendary Yankees manager Joe Torre hosted an annual golf and tennis outing at Sleepy Hollow Country Club on Thursday, all with the goal of making kids feel safe at home.
Torre and some Yankees and sports greats took to the course and the court to raise money for Torre's "Safe at Home Foundation."
Torre grew up in a home where his father both physically and verbally abused his mother. So more than 20 years ago, Torre and his wife created the foundation with the goal of providing trauma intevention and empowerment to kids in schools across the country.
"We hit on something that a lot of kids are dealing with. The two messages we make sure these kids have is the fact that they are not the only ones going through this, they are not alone, and it is not their fault," Torre said.
In total, 20 safe spaces called "Margaret's Place," in honor of Torre's mother, have opened in Westchester County, New York City, Los Angeles and even in Tahiti.
