Another longtime elected official from Brick Township is heading to prison on corruption charges.
Former Brick Township Mayor Joseph Scarpelli pleaded guilty in federal court Monday for taking at least $5,000 in cash bribes from a developer. Investigators believe Scarpelli helped the developer get business in Brick Township. Scarpelli served as mayor from 1994 until he resigned in December following a lengthy federal investigation.
Scarpelli faces between 24 to 30 months behind bars when he is sentenced May 29. He is free on $50,000 bail until his sentencing and his travel is limited to within New Jersey, except for visits to his Florida home.
