Warmer weather means it's a great time to start planting a garden.
Annie Novak, manager of the Edible Academy at the New York Botanical Garden, says it's easy to grow your own herbs and veggies in the comfort of your apartment.
"The thing that's amazing about gardening is that plants want to grow. In an apartment with very little light, you can do seed sprouting. In an apartment with balcony, you can start to grow your own culinary herbs in the space. When you have access to a roof, you can do a whole rooftop garden," she says.
To get started, she says to make sure there is access to light and water. Keep in mind that whatever soils you buy will contribute to the health of the plant that you eat. Also, a pail and trowel are indispensable for digging and prepping.
Novak says the key rule of gardening is to grow what you love to eat because it will motivate you to take care of that plant.
