A Florida police officer who was raised in Wayne has died after being shot in the line of duty.
Officer Adam Jobbers-Miller died Saturday, a week after he was shot in the head trying to arrest a fleeing robbery suspect. The Fort Myers officer had been in critical condition since last Saturday night, when he was injured at a gas station.
The announcement was made at a fundraiser for Officer Jobbers-Millers in Fort Myers.
Fort Myers police issued a statement saying, "It is with a heavy heart that we inform our community that Fort Myers Police Officer Adam Jobbers-Miller has passed away....We ask that you continue to pray for Officer Jobbers-Miller's family, friends and our entire Fort Myers Police Department family."
Jobbers-Miller learned his passion for service in his hometown of Wayne Township. He was a volunteer firefighter at Wayne Fire Company No. 2. His father is the former chief of the department and his sister is a longtime member of the first aid squad.
Wayne mayor Christopher Vergano said Jobbers-Miller's sudden death is like losing a family member.
"It's a tragic loss for all of us," Vergano said.
Jobbers- Miller's former crew members did not want to speak on camera but said he was "not afraid of anything and had a big heart."
Jobbers-Miller is the sixth Fort Myers police officer to die in the line of duty.
A vigil will be held in Wayne for Jobbers-Miller Monday. Funeral arrangements are pending.
