A church in Mahopac was seriously damaged following strong storms that recently hit the Hudson Valley.
"It was flowing like a river here yesterday," said Rev. Fr. Szymon Kurpios.
That water came rushing in Monday at St. John the Evangelist Parish of Mahopac.
"Damaged all the basement social hall, also the top of the church and the first floor of the church was full of the water," Kurpios tells News 12.
Parishioners and people from the community have been pitching in to help clean up. There is a lot of that to do and this space is important to the community.
"The worst part is we operate one of the biggest food pantries in Putnam County," says Kurpios.
On top of the food pantry, it serves as a social hall that brings a lot of communities together.
Kurpios says they have insurance. But there's still a lot of work to be done to prevent this from happening again.
"To prevent, there is a lot of costs to fix the roof, fix the drainage around the church," Kurpios explains.
While there is a long list of things to do, Kurpios says he is grateful for all the people from the community who have helped so far.
"I can see so many people here helping one another. I love the spirit when we can do together," says Kurpios.
