Some Bergen County residents are expressing concern after fliers urging them to join the Ku Klux Klan started appearing on doorsteps in Lyndhurst.

The fliers depict a hooded klansman on a horse with a Confederate battle flag. They read "Join the Klan and Save Our Land."

Mayor Robert Giangeruso says that the message the fliers send won't be tolerated in his town.

"Racism, hatred and bigotry is never something we should tolerate," the mayor says. "We trust this recruitment drive in Lyndhurst will be unsuccessful and our diversity continue to be celebrated."

Lyndhurst police say two to three dozen fliers were distributed Saturday night into Sunday morning. They were inside plastic bags weighted down with stones.

"As far as I'm concerned they are cowards and are sick," says Lyndhurst Police Chief James O'Connor. "There is no reason why we were targeted. As far as I know there are no active members here."

Chief O'Connor says that if residents find any more fliers, they can feel free to throw them out. Residents can also call Lyndhurst police who will get rid of them.

News 12 New Jersey called the North Carolina-based phone number that appeared on the flier to see if anyone would comment. So far no one has called back.
