Two hundred first responders in New Jersey and New York had a special opportunity Wednesday night.
They learned basic sign language as well as a sign language developed just for them. Hasbrouck Heights Middle School hosted the special class.
American Sign Language students, their teacher, and administration want to raise awareness for sign language and those who use it.
"If you are at a car accident and the family in the car accident is deaf or hard of hearing, you need to learn how to communicate with that family," said teacher Shannon Rodenberg.
Teachers say students are excited about learning sign language and hope to see the class continue.
