New Jersey homeowners and renters can expect a little extra cash this summer after the first batch of property tax rebates are sent out Tuesday.
Machines in West Trenton took about a month to print out 1.2 million checks for tenants and senior homeowners. Next week, they will begin printing another estimated 1 million checks for every other homeowner in the Garden State.
Rebates for senior and disabled homeowners could reach up to $2,000, with an average of almost $1,300. Non-senior homeowners could also receive up to $2,000, with an average of $1,000.
Senior and disabled renters could receive from $160 to $860 and non-seniors could get anywhere from $80 to $350.
Gov. Jon Corzine says he hopes the state will eventually get rid of the checks and make the rebate a direct credit instead.
The next batch of rebate checks will probably be mailed out in about a month. Meanwhile, the state has extended the deadline to apply for a rebate from August 15 to October 31.
