First responders in Keyport pulled an exhausted man from the Raritan Bay after he was spotted holding himself above water several yards from a boat dock Thursday.
Firefighters from Keyport Fire Department Squad Company 22 were dispatched to the bay just after 5 p.m. For reports of a person spotted about 40 yards from the end of a boat ramp. According to fire officials, the victim was holding onto a piling and managed to keep his head above water.
"The subject was exhausted and experiencing a medical episode," Keyport firefighters said in a statement.
When crews arrived, a Good Samaritan assisted by bringing her vessel to the dock so that police and firefighters could board the boat and head out to the victim. When they reached him, a firefighter went into the water and helped pull the man to safety.
"The subject was brought back to the boat ramp and turned over to EMS for medical care and transport," fire officials said.
Fire officials have not said how the victim ended up in the water or how long he had been there before rescuers arrived. No information has been released on the man's injuries or current condition.
