A quick response from first responders in South Bound Brook helped save a deer that fell into an icy canal Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighters from the Bound Brook and South Bound Brook fire departments were called to a canal behind the Town Oaks Apartments around 4:15 p.m. for reports of a deer that fell through the ice.

According to the South Bound Brook Fire Department on Facebook, rescue workers attempted to lasso the deer using a rope. The animal’s movement made the process more difficult, ultimately requiring them to bring in a marine unit to assist with pulling the deer out of the water.

Officials say the deer was eventually removed safely. No injuries were reported.
