A late afternoon fire Thursday at a Middlesex County elementary school brought a massive response from area firefighters.
Firefighters arrived at Memorial Elementary School in East Brunswick just before 5 p.m. A custodian who works at the school heard the fire alarm go off and immediately called for help.
Students who attend day camp at the Innes Road school had just come back from a trip and were not inside the building at the time of the fire. Many parents were still concerned, however.
?[I?m] devastated that the school my kids attend was on fire,? says Ronny Walsh. ?It?s not something that happens everyday.?
Officials say most of the damage was contained to one wing of the building. Lt. William Krause, of the East Brunswick Fire Department, says the fire was raging when firefighters arrived.
?They found smoke and flames coming from a back classroom as well as through the roof,? he says.
It?s unclear if Memorial will reopen in time for the start of the school year. Officials are still investigating the cause of the blaze.
