A firefighter from northern New Jersey has broken the record for running a mile in full firefighting gear.
Brendan Corcoran said he made the attempt in an effort to raise awareness about growing cancer rates among firefighters. He ran to benefit the Code 3 for a Cure Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports firefighters battling cancer.
Corcoran beat the record Monday morning at the Ridgewood Run. The old world record of 7 minutes, 58 seconds was set in 2013.
