An old, abandoned train trestle that caught fire in Aberdeen Wednesday afternoon rekindled Thursday morning and has been put out. This is the third fire in the same area in less than 24 hours.
Aberdeen police said in a Facebook post that the brush fire first happened around 2:45 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Lake Boulevard and First Street. The brush fire then ignited an abandoned wooden train bridge, police say.
Police say due to a few hot spots from Wednesday’s fire, a fire apparatus was in the area of Atlantic Avenue on Thursday. Multiple fire companies from around the Bayshore and Western Monmouth region extinguished the blaze.
Police said in a Facebook post that anyone dropping off students to the Matawan Regional High School may experience even more delays on Atlantic Avenue than normal. It is suggested to use Church Street.
The train trestle that was on fire is also close to homes in the area. One resident who lives in the area, said she raced home after hearing about the fire.
“I got pretty nervous,” the homeowner said. “The flames were pretty large, and we have a dog, and we wanted to get home to make sure the house was OK. The flames were very close.”
News 12 is told local kids were questioned by the police in response to the fire.
"Fire is not something to be playing with," said Michelle Wadle, a resident who lives in the neighborhood. "They're lucky nobody was hurt."
No injuries have been reported. An investigation is ongoing.
